Paraclete (Daily Devotional)

True understanding of the function of the Holy Spirit is the greatest secret in Christian circles today. It is a secret which prevents believers from living the balanced, normal Christian life Jesus cam to bring—a secret that can be unlocked only through recognizing and receiving the daily ministry of the Holy Spirit. This daily guide has been designed as your key.

Of the three real Persons of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is generally ignored as the greatest stranger. Jesus Christ came not only to provide salvation—“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16)—but also to introduce the Holy Spirit to those who believe in Him.

John the Baptist explained this profound mystery, saying , “I indeed baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Matthew 3:11)

It is one thing to talk to God as being “triune”—a “Trinity” or “three Persons in One”—but it can be difficult to relate to Him in terms of the Holy Spirit. God the Father and God the Son seem acceptable, while an encounter with the Holy Spirit is often dismissed as an emotional experience or imagined enlightenment. The fact that He cannot be seen and dwells inside believers does not negate His existence. That is simply the nature of His being. He is never received naturally –only as a result of being supernaturally sent by Jesus to live or abide inside our bodies. Through His Holy Spirit, God is omnipresent.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:9) without whom we cannot belong to Jesus. He brings us under His Lordship of Jesus Christ ( 1 Corinthians 123b) and gives us the power (Acts 1:8) to be able to witness about the things that Jesus has done in our lives and throughout history.

Jesus described the Holy Spirit as a Person. He called Him the “Counsellor” or “Comforter.” The Greek word means “defense lawyer.” Because very few of us are acquainted with God’s law. He knew we needed a “Counsellor” who would be with us constantly; Someone who not only knew God’s law, but knew how to live by the Spirit of the Law so that we would not fall into the trap of legalism into which so much religious people fall. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” (John 14:26)

The Holy Spirit enables us to gain great rewards as we overcome our problems through Him (Revelations 2:7,11,17, 26,29; Revelations 3:5, 6,12-13, 21-22) Having Him within makes us more normal—more like Jesus. He does not come to make us weird or strange, but to help us become “conformed to the image of His Son” (Romans 8:29) The Holy Spirit is the One that gives us the power to “present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God which is our spiritual worship”—not to be “conformed to this world,” but to be “transformed by the renewal of our minds, that we may prove which is the will of God, which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:1,2).

He comes to do a work of “justification” by declaring us forgiven and clean before God. It is He who initiates the process of “sanctification” or”holy-ization” or “making saved people holy and keeping them holy” (1 Peter 1:2). It is only after a person has experienced what Jesus calls being “born anew” (John 3:3) and being baptized with the Holy Spirit(Acts 1:8) that he or she can then “worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:23).In other words, he prepares us for acceptable worship.

The Holy Spirit comes to equip us for ministry by distributing the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11). These powerful gifts allow us to meet other people’s needs as we serve Jesus Christ in the Church. While many have little understanding of the gifts and have preferred to discredit their use in the present age that risk any perceived confusion, we do not have to be afraid of what the Holy Spirit will do in our lives. Katheryn Kuhlman said many times , “The Holy Spirit is a Gentleman. He will never do anything to embarrass you or hurt you.” While He will come into our lives to empower us to carry out God’s will and plan for our lives and our Church, He will never force himself upon us. Never.
