The Spirit of the Gifts of Tongues
“…to another various kinds if tongues…”
(1 Corinthians 12:10)
The “gift of tongues” should properly translated as “the gift of other national languages,” according to the original Greek.
When a person receives tongues, he or she receives a legitimate language that is spoken in the past. The gift is the supernatural ability to talk in a language that the speaker has not learned. It is only the Holy Spirit. The evidence of tongues proves that Jesus is Lord because it demonstrates that He has taken control of the most uncontrollable organ in the body—the tongue (James 3:6-10). Contrary the control of the speaker. The gift of tongues has two purposes :
1) Privately, it is to be used in prayer so that we can pray in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
2) Publicly, it is to be used when the Holy Spirit wants to deliver a message to a meeting. When used properly, tongues serve to assist in the development of an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit
